What is pickling steel?
Pickling refers to an essential metal surface purification process primarily performed after metal shaping. This meticulous cleaning method involves immersing the metal in a special acid solution called pickling liquor. The type of acid used varies based on the metal's composition, with hydrochloric acid being the choice for most low alloy steels. For metals that showcase high acid resistance, stronger acids or a two-step pickling strategy may be necessary to ensure optimal surface cleanliness and preparation.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to the pickling process, the metal undergoes an initial rinse to eliminate prominent dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is immersed in a bath of pickling liquor. During immersion, the acid effectively eradicates impurities from the metal's surface. It's crucial to adhere to a specific immersion duration to avert overexposure to the acid, ensuring minimal metal degradation while achieving thorough cleaning. Post immersion, the metal is thoroughly rinsed and often proceeds to an oiling phase to enhance surface protection.
