What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a specialized metal surface treatment process, essential for removing impurities after metal formation. This process involves immersing the metal into a potent acid solution known as pickling liquor, which varies based on the metal type. Typically, hydrochloric acid is used for low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, stronger acids or a dual-step pickling approach may be implemented to achieve optimal surface cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to pickling, the metal undergoes an initial rinse to eliminate large dirt particles. Following this, it is submerged in the pickling liquor bath where the acid meticulously cleans the metal surface. After a set immersion period, the metal is removed to avoid excessive acid exposure. By utilizing the appropriate pickling liquor and immersion duration, surface impurities are effectively eradicated with minimal metal loss. Post-immersion, the metal is rinsed again and may undergo an oiling process for additional protection and finish.
