What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, primarily employed post-metal formation. This meticulous method involves submerging metal into pickling liquor, an acid tailored to the type of metal being treated. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is used as the pickling agent. When dealing with metals that boast high resistance to standard acids, a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling process may be necessary to ensure optimal maintenance and cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinse to remove any substantial dirt and debris from the metal. Next, the metal is immersed in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently cleanses the surface, eradicating impurities. Once the metal has been in contact with the acid for the predetermined duration, it is removed to avoid excess acid exposure. With the right choice of pickling liquor and precise timing, surface imperfections are expertly eliminated, minimizing metal loss. Finally, the metal undergoes another rinse and is typically finished with a protective oiling process.
