What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential and meticulous metal surface cleaning process, predominantly utilized post-formation of the metal. This refining technique involves immersing the metal in an acid solution, known as pickling liquor, which expertly removes surface impurities. The choice of acid is meticulously tailored to the metal type; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is preferred. However, for metals with exceptional acid resistance, a stronger acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling process may be required to achieve the pristine surface quality desired.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to initiating the pickling process, the metal undergoes an initial rinse with a specialized solution to eliminate large dirt and debris particles. This is followed by immersion in pickling liquor, where the acid adeptly cleanses the surface impurities. The process is carefully timed to ensure the perfect cleaning effect without overexposure to the acid, safeguarding against excessive metal loss. After achieving optimal cleanliness, the metal is expertly rinsed and often treated with an oiling process to enhance its finish and longevity.
