What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface cleaning technique predominantly employed post-metal formation. This meticulous process involves immersing metal into a specially formulated acid, known as the pickling liquor, to achieve an immaculate surface finish. The selection of acid is meticulously tailored to the type of metal, with hydrochloric acid being a prevalent choice for most low-alloy steels. For metals that boast high resistance to acids, the process may necessitate the use of a more potent acid or even a dual-step pickling procedure to attain exceptional cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
In preparation for the pickling procedure, metals undergo an initial rinse to eliminate large dirt particles and debris. This is followed by submersion in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid actively removes surface impurities. Adherence to a predetermined immersion time is crucial, ensuring that the metal is extracted before the acid induces overexposure. With precision in both the choice of pickling liquor and the controlled immersion duration, surface imperfections are meticulously eradicated with minimal metal erosion. Following extraction from the pickling bath, the metal undergoes a subsequent rinse and is often finished with an oiling process to enhance surface protection.
