What is pickling steel?
Pickling refers to a specialized metal surface cleaning technique predominantly employed post-formation to ensure optimal purity. In this process, the metal is immersed in an acid solution known as the pickling liquor. The choice of acid is determined by the specific metal type-commonly, hydrochloric acid for low alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, more robust acidic solutions or even a dual-step pickling approach might be necessary to achieve thorough cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Prior to pickling, the metal undergoes an initial rinse to eliminate larger dirt and debris particles. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged in the pickling liquor bath, where the acid acts meticulously to dissolve impurities from its surface. It is crucial to maintain an optimal immersion duration to avoid excess metal exposure to the acid. With the correct pickling liquor and precise immersion timing, surface defects are effectively eradicated, minimizing metal wastage. Following acid treatment, a subsequent rinse occurs, after which the metal often undergoes an oiling process to enhance its finish.
