What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process employed predominantly after metal formation. This meticulous process involves immersing the metal in an acid solution called pickling liquor, effectively cleansing and preparing the surface. While hydrochloric acid is the go-to for most low-alloy steels, metals with higher acid resistance might necessitate the use of a stronger acid or even a two-step pickling method to ensure precise cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinsing of the metal to remove larger dirt and debris particles. Following this initial step, the metal is gently submerged in a bath of pickling liquor. Here, the acid diligently works to eliminate surface impurities. This immersion is carefully timed to avoid overexposure to the acid. By meticulously selecting the right pickling liquor and immersion duration, surface discontinuities are removed with minimal metal loss. Once removed from the pickling bath, the metal undergoes another rinse and is often followed by an oiling procedure to enhance its surface.
