What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential process in metal surface treatment, primarily used after metal formation to achieve a pristine finish. This cleansing method involves immersing the metal in an acidic solution known as pickling liquor, which effectively cleans the surface. The choice of acid in the pickling liquor depends on the metal type, with hydrochloric acid predominately used for low alloy steels. For metals with high resistance to acids, either a stronger acid or a two-phase pickling process may be employed to ensure thorough cleaning.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a preliminary rinse of the metal to remove large dirt particles and debris. Following this, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid works meticulously to strip away surface impurities. Timely removal from the bath is crucial to prevent excessive acid exposure, ensuring impurities are cleared with minimal metal loss. After pickling, the metal undergoes another rinse to eliminate any residual acid, often followed by the oiling process to enhance surface quality.
