What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential process in the metal surface treatment realm, primarily utilized post-metal formation. This sophisticated cleaning method employs 'pickling liquor,' an acid solution that thoroughly cleanses metals. The choice of acid varies depending on the metal; however, hydrochloric acid is predominantly used for low alloy steels. For metals that boast high acid resistance, either a more potent acidic solution or a dual-phase pickling method may be necessitated to achieve impeccable surface cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a preliminary rinse, ensuring that all coarse dirt and debris are eliminated from the metal's surface. Subsequently, the metal is delicately submerged in a pickling liquor bath. This immersion allows the acid to meticulously dissolve surface impurities. To avoid detrimental overexposure, the metal is extracted after a predetermined duration. With the correct pickling solution and optimal immersion timing, the metal's surface discontinuities are efficiently eradicated, preserving its integrity. Following pickling, another rinse is executed, often succeeded by an oiling procedure to enhance the metal's condition.
