What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, commonly employed after a metal is formed. This meticulous process involves immersing the metal in an acid solution known as the pickling liquor, tailored to the type of metal being treated. For most low alloy steels, the reliable hydrochloric acid is utilized. In scenarios where metals exhibit high resistance to acids, a more potent acid or an advanced two-step pickling method is necessary to achieve impeccable cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with rinsing the metal in a solution to clear away large particles of dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently eliminates impurities from its surface. Once the precise immersion duration is reached, the metal is extracted to prevent excessive acid exposure. Proper selection of pickling liquor and accurate immersion timing ensures the removal of surface discontinuities with minimal metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a final rinse and is often subjected to an oiling process to enhance its surface quality and longevity.
