What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly used post-metal formation. This method revitalizes metal surfaces by exposing them to an acid solution known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid varies with the metal type; however, hydrochloric acid is commonly utilized for most low alloy steels. For metals demonstrating high acid resistance, more robust acids or a dual-phase pickling process is employed to achieve optimal cleaning efficiency.
How is pickling performed?
Before commencing the pickling procedure, metals are typically rinsed to dislodge large dirt particles. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid meticulously removes surface impurities. The immersion is carefully timed to avoid excessive acid exposure. With the correct choice of pickling liquor and precise immersion duration, surface defects are efficiently eliminated with minimum metal loss. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed again and often undergoes an oiling process to preserve the metal's integrity.
