What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential surface-cleaning technique for metals, predominantly employed post-formation. This process utilizes an acid solution, termed pickling liquor, to cleanse metal surfaces effectively. The acid type varies with the metal, with hydrochloric acid being the standard for most low alloy steels. For metals with higher acid resistance, either a stronger acid or a dual-stage pickling process might be necessary to ensure optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Initially, the metal undergoes a rinsing phase to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid meticulously removes surface impurities. After achieving the predefined immersion duration, the metal is promptly extracted to avoid excess acid exposure. By employing the ideal pickling liquor and adhering to the precise immersion duration, surface irregularities are effectively eliminated with minimal material loss. Post-pickling, another rinse follows, often succeeded by an oiling process for further protection.
