What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a vital metal surface cleaning process primarily utilized after metal formation. This transformative method involves immersing the metal in an acid known as pickling liquor, which meticulously cleanses the surface. The specific acid type varies based on the metal in question, with hydrochloric acid being prevalent for most low-alloy steels. For metals with high acid resistance, more robust acids or a dual-step approach may be necessary to achieve superior cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Before engaging in the pickling process, metals undergo an initial rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid diligently purifies its surface. Adhering to a precise immersion time ensures optimal cleaning without overexposure to the acid. With the correct pickling liquor and immersion duration, surface imperfections are seamlessly eradicated with minimal metal loss. Once removed from the bath, the metal is rinsed again, often followed by an oiling procedure for enhanced preservation.
