What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface cleaning process primarily employed after the metal has been formed. It rejuvenates and purifies the metal surface by immersing it in an acid bath, known as pickling liquor. The composition of this acid bath varies depending on the type of metal being treated, with hydrochloric acid being the most common for low alloy steels. For metals known for their high resistance to acids, the process might require a more potent acid or a dual-step pickling method to attain the optimal cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
Before the pickling begins, the metal undergoes an initial cleansing phase where it is rinsed with a specialized solution to eliminate large dirt particles and debris. Post-rinsing, the metal is submerged in the pickling liquor bath. Here, the acid meticulously eradicates surface impurities. Adhering to a precise immersion time is crucial to prevent damage from excessive exposure. With the right pickling liquor and calculated immersion period, the surface imperfections are efficiently removed, ensuring minimal metal loss. After the pickling bath, the metal is rinsed again and often undergoes an oiling process for enhanced protection.
