What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an exceptional process used to meticulously cleanse the metal surface, often applied after metal formation. This method involves immersing the metal into a specific type of acid, referred to as the pickling liquor, which varies based on the metal type. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is typically used. However, for metals that exhibit high resistance to acids, a stronger acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling process may be employed to achieve the desired pristine surface quality.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process commences with an initial rinsing stage to eliminate large dirt and debris particles from the metal. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor, where the acid actively removes surface impurities. Care is taken to adhere to a precise immersion time to sidestep overexposure damage. Properly selected pickling liquor and precise timing ensure the elimination of surface discontinuities with minimal metal loss. Once cleaned, the metal is rinsed again and often undergoes a subsequent oiling process to enhance its finish.
