What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a specialized metal surface cleaning process, predominantly utilized after the formation of metal components. This meticulous procedure involves immersing the metal in an acid solution, commonly referred to as pickling liquor. The choice of acid for this solution depends on the specific metal type, with hydrochloric acid often used for low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting high resistance to standard acids, more potent acidic solutions or a dual-step pickling method might be necessary to achieve optimal cleanliness and desired surface quality.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with an initial rinse to eliminate significant dirt and debris from the metal surface. Subsequently, the metal is submerged in a bath of pickling liquor. In this stage, the acid expertly removes surface impurities. It is crucial to adhere to a predetermined immersion duration to prevent excessive acid exposure. By employing the correct acid formulation and precise exposure time, surface irregularities are effectively eradicated with minimal material loss. After exiting the pickling bath, a secondary rinse is conducted, leading to an oiling process that further enhances the surface finish.
