What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a refined and essential metal surface cleaning process, predominantly employed post-metal formation. This transformative procedure effectively purifies metal surfaces by immersing them in a specialized acid solution, known as pickling liquor. The choice of acid is meticulously tailored according to the metal type, with hydrochloric acid being the common choice for most low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting high acid resistance, a more robust acid or a dual-step pickling strategy is employed to achieve optimal cleanliness and surface perfection.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a thorough rinsing of the metal to eliminate coarse particles and impurities. Subsequently, the metal is gently submerged in a bath of pickling liquor. During immersion, the acid meticulously dissolves surface impurities, ensuring a pristine finish. To prevent overexposure, the metal is carefully timed and extracted once the target immersion duration is met. This precision ensures the removal of surface discontinuities with minimal material loss. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a secondary rinse to remove any residual acid, followed by an oiling procedure to protect and enhance the metal's surface quality.
