What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a refined and essential metal surface cleaning process performed after the metal has been shaped. This intricate procedure involves immersing the metal in an acid solution known as pickling liquor. The specific type of acid utilized in the pickling liquor is tailored according to the metal being processed. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is chosen for its effectiveness. However, when dealing with metals that exhibit high resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a sophisticated two-step pickling method is employed to ensure optimal surface cleanliness.
How is pickling performed?
The meticulous pickling process begins with a preparatory rinse to shed large debris and surface dirt from the metal. Following this, the metal is gently submerged in a bath of pickling liquor. The acid then diligently works to cleanse the surface, removing any impurities. Post immersion, the metal is promptly extracted to avoid excessive acid contact, ensuring minimal metal loss. The metal, now pristine, is given a second rinse and often undergoes a subsequent oiling process to maintain surface integrity.
