What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential metal surface cleaning process, meticulously applied after metal formation to ensure pristine cleanliness and optimal surface quality. This process involves immersing metal into a specialized acid solution, known as pickling liquor. The type of acid utilized is tailored to the specific metal, with hydrochloric acid being prevalent for most low alloy steels. For metals exhibiting a high resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a dual-phase pickling approach may be necessary to achieve the superior cleaning required.
How is pickling performed?
The meticulous pickling process commences with a preliminary rinse to eliminate substantial dirt and debris from the metal's surface. Following this cleansing, the metal is submerged in a carefully formulated pickling liquor bath. Here, the acid adeptly dissolves surface impurities. The metal remains immersed for a precisely calculated duration to avoid excessive acid exposure and subsequent metal damage. With the right balance of pickling liquor and immersion time, surface imperfections are efficiently eradicated with negligible metal loss. Upon removal from the acid bath, the metal undergoes a final rinse and is frequently subjected to an oiling process to enhance surface preservation.
