What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a meticulous and essential metal surface cleaning process predominantly utilized after metal formation. This procedure involves immersing metal into a specially formulated acid solution, aptly known as pickling liquor, which meticulously cleanses the metal surface. The acid composition of the pickling liquor is carefully selected based on the type of metal undergoing treatment. For most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the preferred choice. However, for metals possessing high resistance to acids, a more potent acid or an innovative two-step pickling method is often employed to achieve superior cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process, a finesse-driven technique, commences with a preliminary rinsing stage to eliminate substantial dirt and debris particles from the metal. Following this cleansing step, the metal is submerged into a bath of pickling liquor where the acid meticulously removes surface impurities. The immersion duration is precisely controlled to avert any overexposure to the acid, ensuring that surface discontinuities are effectively eradicated with minimal metal loss. Subsequent to the pickling process, a thorough rinsing is performed, with the metal often undergoing an additional procedure known as oiling to enhance surface protection.
