What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential process in metal surface treatment, particularly after metal has been shaped. This sophisticated cleaning method involves immersing metal in an acid bath, known as pickling liquor, which effectively cleans the metal surface. The choice of acid, commonly hydrochloric acid for low alloy steels, may vary based on the metal's resistance to acid. For metals with high acid resistance, stronger acids or a dual-phase pickling process might be necessary to achieve optimal cleaning results.
How is pickling performed?
The pickling process begins with a preliminary rinse to eliminate significant dirt and debris from the metal surface. Following this, the metal is submerged in a pickling liquor bath, where the acid diligently removes impurities. It is crucial to adhere to the specified immersion time to avoid overexposure to the acid. When executed with the appropriate pickling liquor and immersion duration, surface irregularities are efficiently eradicated with minimal metal wastage. Post-pickling, the metal is rinsed again and often undergoes a protective oiling process.
