What is pickling steel?
Pickling is an essential process for cleaning and preparing metal surfaces, especially after their formation. This process involves immersing the metal in a special solution called pickling liquor, most commonly composed of hydrochloric acid for low alloy steels. However, tougher metals may require a stronger acid or a two-step process to ensure thorough cleaning, removing impurities and preparing the surface for subsequent use.
How is pickling performed?
The intricate pickling process begins with rinsing the metal to eliminate larger particles and debris. After this initial cleaning, the metal is submerged into the pickling liquor bath, where the acid meticulously cleanses the surface by dissolving unwanted impurities. To avoid any damage, the metal is only left in the bath for a specified duration, ensuring minimal loss while achieving optimal cleanliness. Post-pickling, the metal undergoes a final rinse and often receives an oiling treatment for enhanced protection and finish.
