What is pickling steel?
Pickling is a sophisticated metal surface cleaning process that is predominantly employed after a metal has been formed. This meticulous process involves immersing the metal in an acid solution known as the pickling liquor to cleanse its surface. The specific type of acid used is determined by the metal requiring treatment; for most low alloy steels, hydrochloric acid is the chosen agent. However, when dealing with metals that exhibit high resistance to acids, a more potent acid or a two-step pickling method may be necessary to achieve optimal cleaning results without compromising the metal's integrity.
How is pickling performed?
Before the pickling process begins, the metal is meticulously rinsed with a special solution to eliminate larger particles of dirt and debris. This pre-treatment ensures that the metal is primed for the subsequent phase, where it is submerged into a carefully formulated pickling liquor bath. During immersion, the acid effectively dissolves surface impurities, yielding a pristine finish. The timing of this process is critical; the metal is removed after a precise duration to prevent overexposure and potential damage. With the ideal pickling liquor composition and controlled immersion time, surface imperfections are expertly eradicated with minimal metal loss.
